Numerous Al Fresco Dining Options from The Coast Guard House in Narragansett

For those who love eating al fresco, the Coast Guard House in Narragansett offers the perfect combination – great local seafood, spectacular views, a huge variety of wines and Rhody-inspired beers and cocktails.

All are available outdoors, and diners can choose from five different seating areas, each with their own vibe.

As generations of Rhode Islanders know, summer would not be complete without a visit to the Coast Guard House’s roomy rooftop deck, with loads of seating and two bars, one covered and one open to the salt air. After a day at adjacent Narragansett Town Beach, sunbathers and surfers often walk over for a cocktail and a taste of the Ocean State’s favorite calamari, fried clams, chowder, raw oysters and lobster rolls. Live music is offered several days a week, and if the weather cooperates, the deck is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Three additional outdoor seating areas were created during an ambitious renovation four years ago, and each have their own charms. On the east terrace, which is actually an outcropping of massive rocks just steps away from Narragansett Bay, visitors relax in Adirondack chairs while enjoying a wide-open view of the Newport Bridge and the beach. Who needs people watching when you’ve got the spray and foam of the crashing waves for entertainment? Appetizers and drinks are available here, and the wine-by-the-glass list is massive – so try something different!

The intimate north patio is closest to the Narragansett Pier Casino, now known as the Towers and an architectural treasure from the town’s gilded past. Enjoy a cocktail at the small bar or a meal at the dining area, which seats 50. The setting is complemented by romantic string lights and gas-lit fires on chilly nights. A 15-foot-long photograph of the coastline in the late 1800s, at the heyday of Narragansett’s popularity, depicts the identical ocean view of diners today.

Nothing says summer more than the sounds and sights of the ocean, fresh seafood that is artfully prepared and friends to share it with. Al fresco dining at the Coast Guard House is first-come, first-served, so come early and snag a spot that matches your mood.
